Funding programs for joint PhD supervision
1. SAFAR Doctoral Scholarship Program
The SAFAR doctoral scholarship program was created in 2017.
These scholarships co-financed by the partner Lebanese institutions and the French Embassy are awarded to Lebanese doctoral students enrolled in joint supervision of their thesis (if applicable, in co-direction) with an institution in France.
They aim to initiate a research project or strengthen an existing scientific collaboration.
All scholarship holders will benefit from the status of French Government Scholar during their stays in France.

2. Joint doctorate program between the Lebanese University and UT/INSA
The objective of the UL/UT-INSA program is to train Lebanese doctoral students through research in the laboratories of the Lebanese University and the establishments of the UT and INSA networks.
The thematic priorities are defined by the partners.
The Lebanese University is responsible for promoting the proposed topics to its students.
The program focuses on the establishment of joint thesis supervision.
The research work is carried out in the laboratories of the Lebanese University and the UT-INSA network according to a principle of alternation which is defined in the thesis joint supervision agreement signed between the Lebanese University and the UT INSA network establishment hosting the doctoral student.
The theses are financed over the 3 years, by the Lebanese University during the stay in Lebanon and by the French establishment during the stay in France.
The UL/UT-INSA program is managed by the International Relations Department of UTT.
It was the subject of the signing of an agreement defining the objectives of the program as well as the means and procedures implemented to achieve these objectives.

3. Joint doctorate program between the Lebanese university and ULCO / UPJV / ARTROIS
The University of the Littoral of the Opal Coast network, the University of Artois and the University of Picardie Jules Verne, in partnership with the Lebanese University through its Doctoral School in Science and Technology, co-finances each year, starting from the 2025/2026 academic year, ten doctoral scholarships for jointly supervised theses.
These scholarships are distributed as follows:
• 3 scholarships with the University of Artois,
• 3 scholarships with the University of Picardie Jules Verne,
• 4 scholarships with the University of the Littoral of the Opal Coast.
Theses concern the following themes:
• Marine sciences,
• Artificial intelligence,
• Renewable and alternative energies,
• Environment and natural resources,
• Health.

4. UL-ACTS Program
ACTS is an engineering company specializing in testing, inspection, certification, and engineering services in the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
Each year, it funds a joint thesis between UL and a partner institute.

5. 3R Lebanon Program (AUF and CNRS-L)
The AUF Middle East, as part of the Special AUF Plan for Lebanon, set up in 2021, jointly with the CNRS-Lebanon, the “3R Lebanon: Research” program. Responses. Resilience”, a new integrated system based on a call for projects combining support for a research project and integrating doctoral mobility in international partnership.
This system aims to support projects with a national impact.
It responds to the request of the Lebanese authorities in a context of crisis and constitutes the AUF’s response to support the resilience of the national scientific apparatus, for the benefit of universities.

6. Doctoral program between the University of Montpellier and CNRS-Lebanon

7. AZM Association (half-grant covering the stay in Lebanon)
The AZM association offers four half-scholarships each year for jointly supervised theses.
These scholarships cover the doctoral student's stay in Lebanon.
The doctoral student must, for his part, find another half-scholarship to finance his stay in the partner institution abroad.

8. Association of specialization and scientific orientation (half-scholarship covering the stay in Lebanon)
The association for specialization and scientific orientation offers four half-scholarships each year for jointly supervised theses.
These scholarships cover the doctoral student's stay in Lebanon.
The doctoral student must, for his part, find another half-scholarship to finance his stay in the partner institution abroad.
