Individual Follow-up Committee
Each doctoral student is monitored by an individual doctoral monitoring committee (CSI).
The thesis supervisor is responsible for meeting with him at least once a year.
The minutes of this meeting are essential for the annual re-enrollment in the doctorate.
Objectives of the CSI
The CSI is a structure that allows for ongoing discussions throughout the thesis with the doctoral candidate, to talk about their progress and the trainings they have attended, but also to prevent any dysfunction in the course of the thesis or in the relationship between the doctoral candidate and their supervisors.
Monitoring committee meetings
The interviews take place in three distinct stages: presentation of the progress of the work and discussions, interview with the doctoral student without the thesis supervisor, interview with the thesis supervisor without the doctoral student. These interviews can be conducted via videoconference.
First year of the thesis
The PhD student writes a progress report (between 5 and 10 pages) for the members of the CSI. This report is sent to the committee members by email at least one week before the meeting. During the meeting, the PhD student presents their progress and outlines the perspectives and the planned schedule for the next 2 years. This presentation should last approximately 20 minutes.
Following this presentation, a discussion takes place with the monitoring committee and the supervision. The committee drafts a report expressing its opinion on the progress of the doctoral work and carefully details the advice it wishes to give to the doctoral candidate.
Second year of the doctorate
The doctoral student is advised to write a summary report of 3 pages presenting the progress of the thesis, the difficulties encountered, and a plan for the remaining year before the writing phase. An oral presentation of the work done and the results is also required.
Third year of the doctoral program
The third committee meeting is a moment for discussion regarding the end of the thesis, the planning, and the post-thesis period. The doctoral candidate must send a report describing their end-of-thesis planning. The committee writes a report in case of any issues, detailing solutions and suggesting measures.
Composition of the committee and validation by the EDST
The composition of the CSI is defined by the thesis supervisor within 6 months of enrollment and validated by the EDST. It remains constant throughout the doctoral program. The CSI is made up of at least two teacher-researchers.
- A member with experience in supervising theses.
- A member belonging to the Lebanese University but outside the team and the faculty of the thesis director.
- At least one member from outside the Lebanese University.
The composition of the CSI remains constant throughout the doctoral program, and its members do not participate in supervising the doctoral student's work or in the defense as reviewers.
