 Our study aimed to investigate the chemical composition, antioxidant and antiproliferative properties of aqueous, ethanolic and phenolic mixture extracts, from leaves and stems of six Lebanese plants: Trigonella berythea, Anacyclus nigellifolius, Astragalus coluteoides , Euphorbia macroclada, Astragalus angulosus and Malva parviflora.
The total phenol and total flavonoid contents have been evaluated in all extracts of these plants. At the same time, the percentage of heavy metals has been estimated using the atomic absorption spectroscopy.
Our results obtained from the phytochemical screening, revealed the presence of different amounts of various active compounds in all extracts from both parts of the six plants such as phenols, alkaloids, glycosides, tannins, resins, flavonoids, terpenoids and saponions. Some heavy metals have been found in different conecntrations in these six plants. Furthermore, the obtained results indicated that all extracts of these plants contain total phenol and flavonoid in different amounts.
On the other hand, the results obtained using three in vitro methods, DPPH, H2O2 and Iron chelating, showed the antioxidant power of the different extracts from both parts of these six plants. Finally, some of the studied extracts showed a cytotoxic effect on MCF7, 293T, U937 and T24 cancer cell lines. In the light of the whole obtained results, we can conclude that these Lebanese plants contain various active compounds and may be useful in the prevention or treatment of various diseases related to oxidative stress.
